Jeanie Lewis, Treasurer, Carmel Valley

A few years ago, Jeanie called MFSC past-President Lonnie Trykowski to find out about a chipping program and Lonnie encouraged Jeanie to come to the FSC meetings. Jeanie wanted to learn what was being done about fuel reduction in our area, so she kept going to meetings and has remained with MFSC ever since!

In 1971, Jeanie lived in the Oakland Hills, where a wildfire had burned many homes and trees, leaving the area looking like a war zone. Jeanie's home was saved by firefighters, thanks to the type of roof on the house. In the years that followed, the density of eucalyptus trees and underbrush grew to dangerous proportions. Fuel reduction work was simply not done. Twenty years later, in 1991, Jeanie was not surprised to see a firestorm wipe out the same area in which she once lived. The lesson of what can happen when dense, unchecked underbrush builds up around flammable trees stayed with Jeanie.

Jeanie Lewis is a retired Speech Therapist. In addition to volunteering for MFSC, Jeanie volunteers for a food pantry, an adult literacy program and a feral cat feeding program. Jeanie Lewis is a Carmel Valley resident.
